Use artificial intelligence responsibly to improve safety analysis, communication, planning and everyday professional effectiveness.
The flagship programme
Proposed duration: eight guided learning hours. This practical programme is designed for safety practitioners and operational leaders who want to use modern AI tools without compromising professional judgement, confidentiality or regulatory responsibilities. The programme is currently in development.
What participants will learn
- Explain the capabilities, limitations and risks of generative AI in a safety context
- Create clear, reusable prompts for common safety workflows
- Critically review AI outputs for factual errors, omissions and unsafe assumptions
- Use AI to support hazard identification and draft risk assessments
- Develop more effective incident-learning, inspection and communication materials
- Protect personal, commercially sensitive and safety-critical information
- Document human review and accountability when AI supports a decision
Proposed eight-module syllabus
- Module 1 – AI foundations for the safety professional: opportunities, limits and responsible use
- Module 2 – Prompting skills: context, roles, constraints, examples and verification
- Module 3 – Hazard identification and risk assessment: structured scenario exercise
- Module 4 – Inspections, audits and compliance support: evidence and human checks
- Module 5 – Incident investigation and learning: timelines, contributing factors and reporting
- Module 6 – Safety communication and training: toolbox talks, briefings and accessibility
- Module 7 – Emergency planning and operational scenarios: tabletop applications
- Module 8 – Governance, implementation and capstone assessment
Hands-on learning
Learners will practise using fictional or suitably anonymised workplace cases. A guided risk assessment exercise will compare an initial AI draft with a professionally reviewed version, requiring participants to identify missing hazards, unsupported controls and assumptions.
Practical prompt library
The planned resource pack includes approximately 50 adaptable prompts spanning inspections, briefings, hazard reviews, training preparation, emergency exercises, contractor communications and management reporting. Every prompt will include a reminder to validate outputs against applicable law, current guidance and workplace evidence.
Learning experience and assessment
The intended learning experience combines short AI-presenter videos, guided reading, interactive decisions, downloadable job aids, knowledge checks and a final applied scenario. The eight-hour target will be substantiated through an activity-by-activity learning-time schedule and quality assurance review before launch.
Responsible AI and human accountability
AI is a support tool, not a competent person, legal adviser or substitute for site inspection. Learners will be taught not to upload identifiable incident details or confidential records to unapproved systems, and to independently verify citations, regulations and safety recommendations.
Who should attend
- Safety practitioners seeking practical AI fluency
- HSE managers and consultants exploring responsible adoption
- Operational leaders responsible for safety communication
- Trainers and internal auditors creating learning resources
Delivery and availability
