IOSH CPD Guide – Planning and Recording Professional Learning

A practical introduction to planning meaningful professional development and maintaining evidence of learning.

Why plan CPD?

Continuing professional development helps safety practitioners identify capability gaps, maintain current knowledge, reflect on practice and demonstrate ongoing learning. A good CPD record captures more than attendance: it explains what changed in professional understanding or action.

A simple CPD planning cycle

  • Identify a development need relevant to your role
  • Set a specific learning objective
  • Select suitable learning activities
  • Complete the activity and record the actual learning time
  • Reflect on what you learned and how it affects your practice
  • Review progress and identify the next development priority

What counts as a learning activity?

Depending on a professional body’s current rules, relevant activities may include structured courses, webinars, technical reading, peer learning, conferences, supervised practice and professional reflection. Acceptance and evidence requirements vary between schemes.

How ICPE GLOBAL courses may help

Our proposed safety courses are being designed with defined outcomes, guided activities and completion evidence to support meaningful CPD records. They are not presented as IOSH-approved courses, and completing a course does not guarantee acceptance of hours or points by IOSH.

Check the current IOSH rules

IOSH membership categories, CPD processes, reporting expectations and any applicable learning-hour requirements can change. Before relying on a stated cycle or hours target, consult the latest official IOSH guidance and your membership requirements. ICPE GLOBAL is independent of IOSH unless a formal relationship is explicitly announced.

Reflective record example

Learning need: improve the quality of AI-assisted risk assessment drafts. Activity: complete a guided hazard-identification exercise and compare AI output with current workplace controls. Reflection: identify omissions and introduce a human-review checklist before any draft is used operationally.

Support for employers

Organisations can use learning plans and evidence logs to help teams pursue relevant development while respecting each professional body’s requirements.
